Living clutter free in 2025
On average 60% of the stuff you have stored in your home is stuff you’ll never use. That percentage is even higher for things stored in boxes in a garage or storage unit.
Let 2025 be the year you start the process of getting rid of things you don’t need and definitely no longer use.
Even well organized homes need to be maintained.
A saying I constantly heard my parents telling me was “what if you need it later”. Hmmm, I’ve not used it in a year or more I’m pretty sure I won’t be needing it “later”. And if it’s been in a box in the garage or basement for X many years then I definitely don’t need it.
With everything from clothing and shoes, housewares to the garage, indoor furniture and patio furniture and yes my sewing and crafting supplies- we downsized it all! It now takes all of 5 minutes to tidy up our home.- from folding a quilt or two to rearranging throw pillows on the sofa and putting away placemats from the dining table.
Living with less stuff means less work and more time to do the things you enjoy.
Pick a room to start in and go for it. Have at least 5 boxes ready and waiting. Once you’ve filled a box go put it in your car. Fill another box and do the same. Soon your car will be filled and you’re driving to a local Goodwill Store to drop off your donations.
We’ve been in this house for just over 2 years and I always have a bag or box set aside for clothing and other items that will be taken to our local GoodWill Store. It never surprises me that we’ve filled the bag or box, we’re in the habit of making monthly donations. Get into the habit of buying a new item to replace something and if it’s still in useable condition, donate the item. Old blankets and towels can always be used at your local animal shelter, just be sure that they’re freshly washed and use fragrance free fabric softeners as animals are sensitive to overly perfumed items.
If you have larger items to donate, say appliances like a washer & dryers, check your local Habitat for Humanity Resell Store, perhaps they can be donated there.
